Secure Data Space

Corporate customers, small and medium enterprises and business users face a number of challenges regarding the sharing, storage and management of their day-to-day operational data and documents. While some larger customers utilise corporate installations, such as Microsoft’s SharePoint, a large number of companies still do not have a centralised solution providing all the necessary tools to effectively enable their business users manage their data. Often this leads to fragmented application landscapes and with the growing bring-your-own-service (BYOS) trends on top of BYOD, users simply use private applications to fill the gaps, often without consent of their IT departments.

This leads to a number of problems ranging from compliance (of where data is geographically stored) to security to feasibility of an integrated corporate data exchange. Most of the available public cloud based services also lack important elements or have commercial models build on exploring the big data opportunity of that stored corporate data, contradicting privacy of data.

BT is now providing a solution to resellers who want to enable their corporate customers address this challenge. Based on technology and service from its supplier SSP Europe, BT GTM offers Secure Data Space (SDS) as a cloud-based software as a service (SaaS). Secure Data space comes with state of the art data centre hosting in the location a customer specifies, ensuring that data does not leave this geographic premises to ensure data protection regulations and compliance. It triple encrypts the data to provide maximum security and also comes with a number of plugins for standard software (e.g. Outlook), tools and smart device applications (such as Android and iOS). To enable tight integration with the corporations other tools and services, the secure data space can be branded into the customer’s design – helping greatly in building trust in communication with its end customers.

At the heart of the secure data space is a role based model guaranteeing a seamless management of rights for accessing, reading or changing data amongst the SDS users. This can be extended to incorporate external users from end customers to provide an enhanced extranet capability.

But the most compelling argument for the service is its competitive pricing. Due to its cloud based nature and a pay-as-you-go model it provides companies with a scalable, affordable and cost efficient solution rendering the use of external applications unnecessary and healing a fragmented IT landscape to make it inherently more secure.
